“I give up!” “It’s too hard!” “I can’t do this!” “I’ll never be any good at that.” “I tried but it didn’t work.” Sound familiar?

The dictionary defines mindset as a particular way of thinking: a person's attitude or set of opinions about something. These statements represent someone being in a fixed mindset. When we are using a fixed mindset, we may believe that we are either good at something or we’re not, we are either smart, or we’re not. We may give up when faced with challenges because we believe that we lack the talent needed. With this mindset, we place a lid on our growth. On the other hand, a growth mindset is the belief that success is based on hard work, training, and perseverance. When using a growth mindset, we believe that we can learn and do almost anything with commitment, dedication, and hard work. Children with a growth mindset recognize that even if they don’t have a “talent’ for something, they can always improve with practice.

The Bible has much to say about healthy minds and thoughts. God’s Word teaches us how to take every thought captive to Him. And, in doing so, He sets us free from anything that binds us. God has given humans that amazing ability to grow and change – science calls it neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to change throughout life. God created us with the ability to change and He has a plan and purpose for our growth. That’s good news!

And still, it can be really tough to tackle many of life’s difficult circumstances. We have all felt the pain of the many changes of the last 18+ months. In addition, your child may have already experienced challenging situations such as divorce, loss of a loved one, change of schools, broken friendships, or you may just want to prepare them for hardships that may come, Compass can help.

So how do we help our kids cultivate a growth mindset? This fall Compass intends to tackle that very question. Through fun activities, small group interaction, and relevant teaching on topics such as Growth through Failure, Time, Flexibility, Change, Feedback, Challenge, and Learning, we’ll help kids develop the ability to identify their mindset in various situations. We’ll teach them the skills and tools that they’ll need to be better equipped to handle inevitable setbacks, obstacles and frustrations. God created us to persist, overcome, learn, grow, and change, all parts of having a growth mindset. Help your child develop their growth mindset by signing them up for Compass today!

Hope to see your kiddos on October 4th!!
